HBIC Review: Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Incarceron (Incarceron, Book 1)Incarceron by Catherine Fisher
Review copy provided by Amazon.com (after I paid them)

PJVS QUICKIE POV: Incarceron is mad mix of science fiction, steampunk, fantasy and adventure. A thoroughly entertaining read that I had to read from start to finish with only a few breath in between. A YA novel that reads more like a Big Girl book, Incarceron had me biting my nails until the end. Not a perfect novel, I did find some of the secondary characters quite annoying, and the main characters often acted out of character and quite juvenile, but overall I'm happy with the outcome and hope to read Sapphique very soon.

REVIEW: After years of war a tyrant took the crown and declared that TIME was to stop. There would be no progress, and technology no matter how helpful would be rendered illegal. Mankind must go back to the age of innocence, a time of manners and protocol and courtesans. A good majority of the population that was considered troublesome will be incarcerated forever in a place called Incarceron. Yet, this is not a prison... it will be paradise.

Finn Starseer awakes in Hell. A chamber where the walls are alive and they watch him. He has no past, all he knows is that he is imprisoned. When he is released from his cell he enters the world of Incarceron, which is far from a paradise. Warlords reign, and chaos breeds disease, death and hatred. Finn knows but one thing, he wasn't born in Incarceron - and he must escape.

A very unique tale, Incarceron is a blend of different genres and styles. The novel is a mish-mash of gritty dystopian and frilly historical steampunk. I've never experienced anything like it, yet the flavor reminded me of Dune. The background itself seemed almost too robust for the YA tone and innocence. And I almost think it might have been better served wrapped in an adult SciFi package. I found myself almost awed by the background, the world building and the prose - but at different points I would be shaken by some of the more juvenile behaviors of the characters. One being the almost infantile reactions Claudia had. She was bred for court politics and it was reiterated how cold, detached and manipulative she could be - yet she reacted at moments like a spoiled child, her and Jared whispering their findings where they knew there would be listening devices. They would often spew out their plans to relative strangers and their attempt at political maneuvering was sometimes silly. Then there was Finn, whom I really pitied through half the book. He was such a pathetic creature, a complete victim, definitely not someone I saw as hero material. Then there were the secondary characters. I really liked Jared he was probably my favorite but all the rest could have dissipated for all I cared. Keiro, well he was made to be unlikeable. Attia, I would have left her in the tunnel, especially after that end bit and her all with-holding vital information, what was that about? These short-comings did detract form the novel, but in a whole it was quite good and I look forward to reading #2.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Innocent enough for younger teens. Fans of The Hunger Games, Uglies and SciFi tales such as Dune will enjoy.

BWB 3/4

1. Claudia was portrayed as a very strong character, did you think bravery lead her steps into Incarceron or do you think she just played a card in the prisons hand?

I think Claudia was forced on us as a strong character. *IMHO* They kept on saying, O Claudie, U so strong. But unfortunately I found some of her actions were just manipulative or spoiled rich girlesque. I think she really didn't want to marry Caspar and it was a very impulsive step on her part. I mean really she tore up the dress like a child! I didn't get bravery, I got impulsiveness and her only ticket out of the crazy princes bed.

2. Although Jared and Claudia's relationship is purely student/ teacher....did you pick up any undercurrent of sexual tension between them?

Well, yeah. They kept on accusing them of it...and then Claudia would get all huffy and self-righteous. There was a weird blur between age in this novel - so by all means Claudia could be hot for teacher, but I think she is just stubborn enough to deny herself a match made in heaven. Plus, I think her eyes are on the crown...

3. Spill! What are your predictions for the next book {Sapphique}? What are you looking forward to/what do you hope gets explained before the grand finale?

I think most of the book will be them trying to get back into Incarceron - just as all of Incarceron was spent trying to get out. I think Finn/Giles will be used as a pawn and there will be more doubt shed on him that he isn't actually Giles. I also think Claudia and Finn will try to force a relationship, but it might be awkward, with Claudia always running to Jared and Attia always in the back of Finn's mind.

4. What do you think of the relationship between the Warden and the Queen in regards to the big picture?

I think the Queen might have a little more than adoption papers to hold over the Warden's head.

5. Do you think that Finn is the only one besides Sapphique who has escaped or left Incarceron?

Well, actually there was a third right? That little girl child... *spoiler*
Claudia.

6. What is your take on the futuristic aspects mixed with the period clothing and mannerisms? Is this what would be considered Steampunk or is it more Science Fiction?

I thought it was a good and incredibly intelligent blend of steampunk (futuristic gadgets in period world), Science Fiction (futuristic), Dystopian (tyrant Queen enforcing oppression with one girl pushing back) and adventure (the quest for Escape).

HBIC Review: Incarceron by Catherine Fisher

Young Adult, Published by Dial January 2010
Hardcover: 448 pages

Book Synopsis

Incarceron -- a futuristic prison, sealed from view, where the descendants of the original prisoners live in a dark world torn by rivalry and savagery. It is a terrifying mix of high technology -- a living building which pervades the novel as an ever-watchful, ever-vengeful character, and a typical medieval torture chamber -- chains, great halls, dungeons. A young prisoner, Finn, has haunting visions of an earlier life, and cannot believe he was born here and has always been here. In the outer world, Claudia, daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, is trapped in her own form of prison -- a futuristic world constructed beautifully to look like a past era, an imminent marriage she dreads. She knows nothing of Incarceron, except that it exists. But there comes a moment when Finn, inside Incarceron, and Claudia, outside, simultaneously find a device -- a crystal key, through which they can talk to each other. And so the plan for Finn's escape is born. (GoodReads)

Review

Incarceron holds many secrets- the first - its location- from its inhabitants and the outside world. Incarceron can feel, breath and sense all the emotions in the prison. It can be light or dark, hot or cold and can control all the elements in its world. Many of the prisoners are so embedded in Incarceron, they have no thoughts of a different place or time, but some feel the isolation and wrongness of the prison, one of those is Finn. With no way out and no knowledge of his past, Finn is determined to find the man that can help him, the only man who knows Incarceron’s whereabouts and the only man who holds the key to its door- the warden.

Life outside the prison has the sunlight, the stars and the moon. Not everything is paradise though, real life has been put on hold, no advancement, no going forward and its people are stuck in a forced Era of a time passed long ago. Claudia daughter to Incarceron’s warden lives in this world and on the cusp of an arranged marriage she stumbles upon a truth that will rip the reality of the Outside apart. Fisher captures two very different yet strong characters both trapped in their own prisons. Each one wanting to get out, each wanting to know the truth. When by chance both of them find a duplicate key, they find each other and are able to communicate through it. With hope of a way out of the prison, Claudia begins to dig deep into Incarceron’s secrets and devises a plan to guide Finn to the Outside.

Incarceron is layered with many weird and futuristic elements; the prison shows us a world of metal rainstorms, hybrid individuals and red camera eyes. When Finn speaks to the red laser and finally gets a response it reminded me of that crazy space movie with the astronaut talking to that computer. While Incarceron pulls us into science fiction, the Outside shows us more the dystopian themes. With old era kingdoms, control over the society by force of time progression, evil queens that practice sorcery and the plots for ultimate power. Ms. Fisher did an amazing job bringing these two worlds and two characters together, some of the visual imagery and almost slow-motion action scenes put you right into the thick of this novel. Although slow building in the plotline; I thought the pace fit the story to bring you the feel of both worlds. Once the climatic part hit it did speed up the story and resolved it's main issue. With many questions left and a cliffhanger leaving us wanting more, Incarceron was a fantastic thrill ride with in-depth characters, who’s really the bad guy here moments and guessing at every turn. Fall into a fascinating, brilliantly written science fiction adventure that will intrigue you with its intelligent prison and futuristic themes.

Rating

Incarceron can be enjoyed by many readers including teens and adults as well as middle grade readers who read above average. Contains- mild language, violence, action, fantasy elements with dystopian themes, depression, grief, betrayals and magic.

4/4- YA- Sci-fi- Dystopian- Fantasy

BWB Discussion Questions

1. Claudia was portrayed as a very strong character, did you think bravery lead her steps into Incarceron or do you think she just played a card in the prisons hand?

I think Claudia and Jared out tricked the prison. I believe her bravery lead her steps and listening to her heart about Finn helped her determine to free him. Also near the end I think Claudia was fueled by anger. Anger and love can move mountains!!

2. Although Jared and Claudia's relationship is purely student/ teacher....did you pick up any undercurrent of sexual tension between them?

I know it my seem ewwy, because Jared came off as much (much) older than Claudia but......I think there was some undercurrent attraction going on. Claudia trusts him completely and I think Jared loves her as well.
They act much closer than teacher/student and rely on each other a bit more than say father/daughter. I don't see a connection between Claudia and Finn but at this point there has been no romance in the book....so I guess we will see!!

3. Spill! What are your predictions for the next book {Sapphique}? What are you looking forward to/what do you hope gets explained before the grand finale?

Well I see Finn taking his rightful place.....perhaps going back in to rescue Attia and his brother...(I think there may be something up with Finn and Attia) Who knows- hopefully they can find a way to super size the prison and free all its inhabitants.

4. What do you think of the relationship between the Warden and the Queen in regards to the big picture?

I think it was a complete manipulate/blackmailing relationship. I think both were trying to outdo each other, Certainly the queen is not done with her scheming and the warden obviously has some tricks up his sleeve...(little sleeve now) but I got the feeling that these two are bitter enemies.

5. Do you think that Finn is the only one besides Sapphique who has escaped or left Incarceron?

Hard to say...but as of now yes....I think these are the only two, unless there is some crazy tunnel that others have found...but according to the rules of Incarceron and how Fisher set the plotline it would only be possible for Finn to have escaped.....the ending in the cave threw me but also made me stop and think if Sapphique really got out or is perhaps not even real.........

6. What is your take on the futuristic aspects mixed with the period clothing and mannerisms? Is this what would be considered Steampunk or is it more Science Fiction?

The storyline was defiantly science-fiction, although it had dystopian elements Incarceron wrapped itself around fantasy and mystery. I think the clothing and feel was for sure Steampunk. Only the whole forced Era and mannerisms were fake, If I compared this I could see it as a Sherlock Holmes meets Blade Runner.

HBIC Review Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison
June 29th 2010 by Dorchester Publishing
Mass Market Paperback, 322 pages
Review Copy

Book Synopsis

Death .....Some people will do anything to avoid it. Even trade their immortal souls for endless existence. Wraiths ....Secretly, inexorably, they are infiltrating our world, sucking the essence out of unsuspecting victims with their hideous parody of a kiss. Segue..... Adam Thorne founded the Institute to study and destroy his monster of a brother, but the key to its success is held in the pale, slender hand of a woman on the run. There is something hauntingly different about Talia O’Brien, her unknowing sensuality, her uncanny way of slipping into Shadow. Twilight...... This is the place between life and what comes after - a dark forest of fantasy, filled with beauty, peril, mystery. And Talia is about to open the door. (GoodReads)

The Banshee (pronounced /ˈbænʃiː/, BAN-shee), from the Irish bean sídhe [bʲæn ˈʃiː] ("woman of the síde" or "woman of the fairy mounds") is a female spirit in Irish mythology, usually seen as an omen of death and a messenger from the Otherworld. (Wikipedia)

A Banshee in reality is me…wife and mother of three yelling at her pretty’s to clean their rooms…in Erin Kellison’s amazing debut a screaming banshee is Talia daughter to death and mortal. Born from the shadows of Twilight and watched by the Dark Fae , she posses a power to yield the dark shadows around her and drag every force from Between to destroy and track the wraiths attacking the earth.

I very much enjoyed Shadow Bound, from its hauntingly poetic prologue to its quiet subtle end. I felt Erin’s words flowed beautifully from dark seductive descriptions to a modern day mystery which kept me entertained and intrigued with the flow of the plotline. I loved the use of the Fae in this novel, not that the story was wrapped around faeries themselves but the world of the faeries which created a very dark tone and a rather freighting look into the creatures that live in Twilight.

Writing aside though I did have a hard time connecting with the two main characters of the novel, I was pining for Shadowman and Katherine's story but Shadow Bound follows Talia, the doomed lover’s daughter after her first terrifying encounter with a wraith. At first Talia doesn’t understand her powers or who she is. She’s scared of the shadows that ultimately are her protection and she fears her father who let’s face it…were all scared of…after trying to discover who she is and writing tons of research on the wraiths and Shadowman she attracts the attention of Adam, director of a research foundation called Segue whose sole purpose is to discover a way to rid the earth of the soul sucking wraiths. Adam is not driven though by scientific interest, he holds a personal vendetta against the wraths seeing how his older brother is one who by the way is trapped in the research basement just waiting for his chance to escape and eat some brains. The hard part about connecting to these two was the abrasiveness of their relationship, Talia and Adam have major attraction to one another, but Adam in the beginning is fueled by anger and darkness where Talia is just flaky in her emotions, one minute she’s confused and wants to escape Adam the next she wants to hold and comfort him, next she wants to smack him, next she’s having hot sex with him on a glass window………..

Although the development of their relationship and their personality’s wind you in slowly, Adam does redeem himself as a courageous man with love as his intention while Talia discovers her inner strength and truly finds who she is. While I love where the end takes us, I cannot wait to see if Erin continues with Shadowman and Katherine. For sure an enjoyable read to those who love PNR and fantasy novels.

Rating

Shadow Bound is recommended to adults only. Contains- violence, murder, frightening elements including dark magic, graphic sexuality and language.

3/4- Paranormal Romance- Wraiths

Shadow Bound by Erin Kellison - PJV Review

Shadow BoundShadow Bound by Erin Kellison
Review copy provided by author.

Stalk the Author: Web | Twitter | Facebook

PJVs QUICKIE POV: I’m always happy to experience a new author’s voice, it’s exciting to read a debut, like trying a new wine or if you are not into that...a new dish with all your favorite ingredients. Sometimes these experiments leave you disappointed, running back to your old favorites...but other times they push aside the rest, soar to the top and leave you hungry for more. This, my friend, is what Shadow Bound did for me.

REVIEW: Talia O’Brien is the spawn of death himself. Half fae, whom are the guardian of the in betweens, and half human, Talia can wrap shadows around herself, more comfortable in the dark than she is in the light with the living.

On a day that changed her life forever, Talia came face to face with a monster and watched it suck the soul from her roommates body. The only thing that saved her was death - she has been running ever since. Now trapped in an alley with a wraith hunting her, on verge of heat stroke and dehydration, Talia must make a choice. Should she trust the man that has come for her? Should she put her life in his hands and her powers behind his cause? His natural charm and his casual good looks don’t make it any easier for her and as more and more comes out into the open about both Adam and Talia it might not just be their lives on the line, but their hearts also.

This book had me saying “wow” as I scrolled through it. The author's tone drips with old world depth and verse that historical authors try but very rarely achieve, which was surprising for a modern urban fantasy. The tone was reminiscent of one of my favorite YA authors, Maggie Stiefvater.  Like Steifvater you could almost drink in the words as if they were a humid evening instead of two dimensional words on a page. As the novel progresses the tone did evolve into a more modern narrative, but oddly I was not disturbed by the shift. It worked with the story.  Much as the shifting POV did. The POV shifts seamlessly from Adam to Talia leaving the reader with a varied world view, yet it didn't lead to confusion like often happens in ambiguous POV changes. The storyline was also very original, I have read before of soul sucking, and kisses of death...but the author paired it together in an original way.  I was highly impressed with Shadow Bound...and I can’t wait to read the second installment Shadow Fall.

The one short-coming that I did find with the novel was more of a “taste” preference. The heroine was a little more malleable than I would have liked and the hero a bit too one-tracked, leaving the romance a bit on the fizzle side instead of the passionate. But, like I said this is a personal preference - reading too much PNR I like my girls with snark and my boys with bite. (Insert Kitty Rrrrr here)

RECOMMENDATIONS:  Adult novel, for mature readers. This novel has a more fantasy feel than UF, even though it really is UF, so this might be a great transition book for fantasy lovers.

Wraiths: Pucker up. Guest Post with Erin Kellison

Erin Kellison is the author of the Shadow Series, which includes Shadow Bound and Shadow Fall. Stories have always been a central part of Erin Kellison's life. She attempted her first book in sixth grade, a dark fantasy adventure, and still has those early hand-written chapters. She graduated summa cum laude with a degree in English Language and Literature, and went on for a masters in Cultural Anthropology, focusing on oral storytelling. When she had children, nothing scared her anymore, so her focus shifted to writing fiction. She lives in Arizona with her two beautiful daughters and husband, and she will have a dog (breed undetermined) when her youngest turns five.

There is also a NOOK giveaway on Erin's Web Site, so go on over there and check it out! Also, win Erin's novels, Shadow Bound & Shadow Fall on the BWB. Click here.

And without further ado... here is Erin Kellison:

Wraiths: Pucker up.
My Shadow series (including Shadow Bound and its sequel Shadow Fall) is all about the creatures that exist at the brink of life and death. I guess I’m twisted that way. Spirits (Ghosts) are the souls of people who fight against moving on from mortality to the afterlife. They exist by will alone and cannot act on the mortal world (because they have no body to do so).

Wraiths are almost their complete opposite. They have bodies, but have given up their souls for immortal life. The longer they go without feeding, the less connection with humanity they have. They are inhumanly strong, with exceptional senses.  Where did I get the idea for them? Well, I’ll tell you.
When I was a kid, I watched a cartoon in which a young man walks down a country dirt road. He sees a really pretty young woman down the way and approaches her. She immediately puts her arms around him in an embrace. He is surprised. She puts her lips to his, but instead of making out, she sucks the life out of him. He ages rapidly, then falls to the ground, a near corpse. Lovely story, right? (By the way, I have no idea what the name of the cartoon is or even how old I was when I saw it or I’d give it credit here. If anyone can name it, I’ll give you a copy of both my upcoming releases. I’d love to see this show again. I’ve seen variations on this idea in TV and film, but would love to see the original cartoon from childhood.)

The story stuck with me, like a nightmare I couldn’t shake. BUT, as I grew up and the story replayed itself in my head time and time again, I started to think through the idea. A kiss, bringing death. Later, after acquainting myself with more and more fantasy, I named this creature wraith.  I picked up the idea for a wraith creature from this cartoon, so I owe it a big fat thank you. With one difference: The wraiths of my Shadow series don’t suck life-energy. They suck souls.

Here’s an excerpt from Shadow Bound showing the wraiths in action.  The main character is Talia O’Brien, who has a few special gifts of her own.  This is her first introduction to the wraiths.

The woman smiled with edged condescension. “Ms. O’Brien. It’s my honor to serve you. My master sends his regards and looks forward to meeting you in person.” She turned to her companion. “Finish that one quickly, Grady. We need to get going.”

Grady lifted Melanie off the floor.

“Stop it!” The room was getting darker, but Talia couldn’t help it. “Put her down!” Melanie was almost purple. “Please let her go. I’ll do whatever you want.”

“You’ll do that anyway,” the woman answered. “And Grady’s hungry. If he doesn’t eat now, he’ll be pestering me all the way back to stop for a little human takeout. And I can’t have that.”

Melanie’s eyes flickered back in her head like some kind of waking REM.

Talia looped her arms over Grady’s outstretched one and put her weight into pulling them both down. He would not budge. He smiled at her efforts. She kicked at him. He seemed flesh enough, but he reacted like stone.

The woman grabbed Talia’s shoulder and pulled her away with such unexpected strength that Talia stumbled backward.

“You can’t hurt him,” the woman said, “it’s useless to try.”

Talia swiped at the tears of frustration blurring her vision. Please let this be a nightmare.

Then Grady opened his mouth. Opened and opened beyond anything human. He bared his teeth, all sharply pointed and strangely extended, and pulled Melanie toward him. Mouth clamped over mouth.

Talia froze midbreath in horror. She felt a tug in her gut. A tug from a well of life and soul. Not hers, still seated snugly in her body. But an echo of Melanie’s self being ripped out, fed upon in a desecration of spirit that scored Talia’s mind and heart.

Utter blackness fell as Talia screamed.
